The Sea of Cortes and the waters surrounding the Peninsula of Baja California are the perfect protected enviroment for the reproduction of oceanic mammals, thus, during the year and in different months, this is the temporary home for several species of whales, such as Blue, Humpback, Sperm, Fin Back, Minkies, Bride, Orcas, etc., but particularly the Gray Whale.  Even if the Gray Whale spends her life feeding in the Arctic Ocean, it migrates from the Behring Sea all the way down to Baja california, where sexually mature individuals get together, and pregnant females give birth to the calves conceived the previous year, then considered a Mexican whale and strictly protected by law.

The main areas for the gattering of these enormous but gentle giants, are : Scammon's Lagoon (Guerrero Negro), San Ignacio Lagoon, and Magdalena Bay (Puerto Lopez Mateos and Puerto San Carlos).  These sea water lagoons are well protected from predators and dense sea water where baby whales grow faster and get ready for the 5000 miles trip back to feeding grounds. These baby whales since birth are used to see small boats with humans around them, and as they are intelligent animals, realize clearly that these boats do not intend to harm them and their behaviour is very friendly while the mothers are tolerant, developing a strange interaction between people and whales not reported anywhere else in the world.
